Make Your Move—Sign Up for Riverside’s Chess Club for 2020
For a second consecutive year, Riverside will be offering a Chess Club for students in grades 3-8 only and sign-up is now available (12-student limit). The sessions will feature lessons in planning, strategy, logic, collaboration and attention to detail—with a lot of fun mixed in along the way.
Please note: No previous experience or exposure to chess
is necessary—just a willingness to learn, a desire to have fun and pick up a new skill.
Come Check Out Riverside’s New Parent Library—
New Selections Are Being Added Each Day
Recently introduced, Riverside has initiated a parent library in our school entryway.
This area features a wide range of books, including a variety of insightful selections that provide interesting insights into dyslexia from some of the top experts in the field as we all look to glean more information about dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.
Parents and visitors, please feel welcome to pick up a book to read and remember to sign it out on the accompanying sheet on the table.
Please e-mail: email@example.com should you have any questions.
Thank you for your support of Riverside School!
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE LIBRARY through the book fair. Students loved choosing books that they will get to keep. Thanks to your generosity, we purchased more than 50 books from the Scholastic Book Fair for the library, as well as leaving additional funds for books from other sources and adding to our MakerSpace collection of STEM activities in the library.

WE HAD A GREAT TIME PERFORMING at the Grandparents and Special Friends Day assemblies! I am proud of each student that participated. This week we will be using our new bass metallophone in our instrumental lessons! I’m looking forward to teaching the children some winter songs this week and continuing our study of the treble staff with a fun matching game.

Parents’ Association News
Please join us for our holiday Parents’ Association meeting at
8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Joe’s Inn on Buford Road (2616 Buford Road, Bon Air, Va. 23235; 804-320-9700). Come enjoy coffee or breakfast if you can.
On Thursday, Dec. 19, please help us show the teachers and
staff at Riverside how much we appreciate them by sending in two dozen cookies with your child. For those of you new to Riverside, the Cookie Exchange is a way for the parents and children to show their appreciation for the teachers and staff at
The Parents’ Association provides festive cookie boxes for each staff member to fill with cookies and we ask each student to send in two dozen cookies (don’t worry—they don’t need to be homemade) the morning of the exchange. Each staff member will then be able to begin their holiday break with a delicious box of cookies courtesy of Riverside’s wonderful families!
Lunch Volunteers Needed
Please click here if you are able to help distribute lunches. New dates have been added for December. Your help is needed and greatly appreciated.
Mrs. Cain is looking for help on Tuesdays in the library from 8:30-

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE for helping us put on a terrific Grandparents and Special Friends Day! Thanks to the parents for helping spread the word and coordinate details with the grandparents and special friends. Thanks to the wonderful Riverside staff for tackling the variety of special duties of the day. Thanks to our students for being great hosts and ambassadors for Riverside. And thanks especially to the more than 130 guests who took the time and effort to join us last Tuesday.
As I have said, this is one of my favorite days of the school year because it gives us a chance to share and celebrate the special things going on at Riverside. What a great kick-off to the holiday season!

A Few Friendly Reminders…
TODAY, YOUR CHILD WILL BE BRINGING HOME
their yellow Progress Note as well as their school picture order, if you ordered them.
Please sign and send back the yellow Progress Report tomorrow in your child’s Thursday folder.
Also, just a reminder to make sure you send your child with a snack daily. We do not have snacks to provide your child if they forget and have noticed lately that many students don’t have snacks on days that they are getting a ‘hot lunch.’

THE WINTER HOLIDAYS ARE OFFICIALLY HERE, and I know because twice already this week I have fielded requests to lead holiday songs at our Morning Assembly. Yesterday we sang ‘The Dreidel Song’ (a big favorite from last year) and this morning was ‘Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’
If you have some family favorite holiday songs that translate well to acoustic guitar and 81-plus voice choir, please encourage your children to bring them to me as recommendations. It is indeed the ‘most wonderful time of the year,’ and there is no better way to start a Riverside School day than with a song.

In Their Own Words…
“The teachers are really nice, I like LF (Language Fundamentals) and you don’t get bullied here.”
— Leyton, student at Riverside School

Why don’t turkeys make good pitchers?
They always throw ‘fowl’ balls!
