Inside Riverside

December 2017 seems so long ago, but Riverside joins in thanking all the parents for the wonderful cookies that the school received. They brought much holiday cheer to Riverside faculty families.

Day of Giving
On Riverside’s Day of Giving, students made 156 gift bags to be distributed by Soles2Share. Each bag had two pairs of socks, lip balm, foot powder, and several chocolates. Students made beautiful notes of encouragement and included them in each bag they assembled. Riverside received 313 pairs of socks, 126 containers of foot powder, and 286 lip balms! Your generosity allowed this service project to be a huge success, and we are most grateful. Thank you!

Continue the Holiday Cheer
For families still putting away holiday items and have cards to be recycled, Mrs. Healy would love to have them for winter art projects. Thank you!

Welcome to the Flota and Cheatham families!
Riverside is very excited to inform everyone that the school two new students. Addi Flota is in Miss Myers’ class and Molly Cheatham is in Mrs. Waldenmaier’s class.

Conference Connection
Scheduled conference times are in students’ Thursday folder. Please confirm that you are available at this time and sign and return the form in the folder.

Fighting the Flu
Virginia is in the “red zone” for the flu epidemic. Unfortunately, the bug seems to have spread to Riverside. Unlike years past, the symptoms can range from chills and fever to sore throat, cough, body aches and vomiting. Viruses spread very quickly through a small school like Riverside, so please keep your child home if he or she is not feeling up to par.

In addition, students need to be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please know that any child that has been absent from school due to illness will be given adequate time to make up missed assignments and fit right back into the schedule.

Cut It Out
It’s time to collect General Mills Box Tops! Please cut out the box tops and submit them by next Friday, Jan. 19.

We are Sooo Close to Our Goal — Thank You

In spite of the weather, we are off to an amazing start for 2018. Thanks to many generous donors, we went from 55% to 71% of our $115,000 Annual Fund goal (cash in hand) in just a month! Parent participation jumped from 33% to 45% in that time as well. All told, we are SO close to winning a $1,000 challenge grant if we get to 50% participation in the Annual Fund by current Riverside families. A gift of any amount will help Riverside leverage this excellent opportunity. Thank you for all you do!

Donations can be made on our website: https://www.riversideschool.org/donate-now/ or with a check made out to Riverside School.

From the desk of…the Head of School

Mea culpa. I made the wrong call on Tuesday, Jan. 9 when I texted out that we would open on time and then changed it to a two-hour delay. I should have texted the two-hour delay immediately, or at least sent out a “hold off for a moment while I get on the road myself and see what it is like.” I apologize, especially to the parents who started off for school and then had to turn around.

A couple of parents with whom I spoke said that they considered texting or calling me to let me know what was happening in their neighborhood, but then they decided not to. If / when this happens again, please don’t hesitate to call me, text me, or email me. Riverside families live all over the Richmond metropolitan area, and I need to take that into account on bad weather days.

I also heard from a number of parents who made the decision for safety reasons not to come in before they heard about the delay. Please know that this is always valid—you are the best judge of what is safe or not.

Thank you for exercising that judgment.
