OUR APPROACH
AND PHILOSOPHY

EACH TEACHER AT RIVERSIDE SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW EACH STUDENT LEARNS AND WORKS TO DEVISE AN INDIVIDUAL APPROACH.

Riverside School is proud to be the only school in Virginia accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, the Southern Association of Independent Schools, and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Riverside School offers a curriculum and teaching approach that is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of students in grades K-8 with dyslexia and similar language-based learning differences.

The scientifically validated Orton-Gillingham Approach is used in the classroom and in one-on-one Language Fundamentals Instruction provided to each student for 45 minutes a day, four days a week. Each teacher seeks to understand how an individual learns and devises an appropriate, individualized teaching strategy for the student.

The basic purpose of everything that is done in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, from recognizing words to composing a poem, is assisting the student to become a competent reader, writer, and independent learner.

ORTON-GILLINGHAM

This scientifically validated Approach has been transforming education for dyslexic children for almost 100 years.
